I am not an artist. I am creative.
As the saying goes, I couldn’t draw a stick figure if you paid me. Well, maybe that is an exaggeration, but you get the picture.
I started going to group painting classes and liked them. Then I got into the virtual painting classes you join in on from the comfort of your home. This lit a fire in me. It is something to do – a meditative, peaceful learning experience.
Painting to me is like a math equation. That’s the only way I can describe it. It’s like my brain is trying to figure out how to paint what I see, without having to actually draw it first. Like knowing the answer to a math equation without having to “do the math”.
Anyone who has watched Bob Ross knows he used a paint brush, one you’d paint your walls with, to create his works of art. He was an artist, but also creative. Making mountains, rivers, forests, and flowers all appear, like magic, on canvas. All done with strokes of his painter’s paint brush. It was stunning then; it is stunning now.
I was in a paint class talking to the teacher, and he suggested I investigate the genre of art called Naïve Art. Those who are in this category tend to lack the formal training and education many fine artists have, yet we are still artists.
Naïve artists are not to be confused with hobbyists, or “Sunday painters,” who paint for fun. The naïve creates with the same passion as the trained artist but without the latter’s formal knowledge of methodology and often disagree with dominant art trends of their time.
The rebel in me completely digs that definition.
I have embarked on this journey discovering a whole new side of myself. I intend to grow and learn more about this art form and myself in the process.
So do you have an artist/painter/creative soul hiding in you? Chances are, you do! Try taking a virtual painting class – you may discover a whole new world of creative expression.
