When I reached out to authors earlier this year, looking for new books to review, the authors of 12 Tiny Things provided me a brief description that immediately intrigued me. Why? Because we here at the MockingOwl Roost – and I personally – are all about wellness, taking care of ourselves and helping others do the same. Sometimes self-care does include sacrifice, but more often than not, self-care is what allows us to be able to sacrifice for those we love or for causes that matter most.
12 Tiny Things is all about finding simple ways that help you find the best life possible. Specifically, the authors, Heidi Barr and Ellie Roscher, explore these twelve topics to find that place of rest, of peace, of health within them. And they do seem pretty tiny in the scheme of the world – but they make all the difference in helping yourself find grounding in the insanity of this life: space, work, spirituality, food, style, nature, communication, home, sensuality, creativity, learning, and community.
These areas are all fairly encompassing of our lives, but the book takes a look at little tweaks, little acknowledgements we can make to better our existence and live a healthier, happier life within these walls of reality.
I found the book an encouragement myself – a simple, easy read through which I can explore some of my own struggles with finding simplicity and joy. If you’re anything like me – a busy, creative, always doing do-er – you could probably benefit from reading it. Even if you’re not, though, it’s a good read and may well help you get some perspective in the crazy world around you.
I highly recommend the read – but take your time. Reflect, process, take notes. It could really help reduce some stress and struggle in your life.
