Taking a Break – Cleansing for the Soul
Life has been heavy for all of us the last year and a half. And for others longer than that. We may need to step back and step into a season of self-care. Sometimes you just need a break.
How this looks for each of us is different. Maybe we need to stop our busyness and look around with more gratitude. Maybe we need to back away from the news and go on a media sabbatical. Maybe we need to just take a moment to breathe deeper and reach out within your realm to reconnect with those you love.
For me, I’ve been doing a bit of all the above. The news, no matter what sources you listen to, does not feed the soul. Social media has never been in that business. So, I’m not looking to it for that feel good vibe (not that I ever have). Instead I put on music that feeds my soul, from Holy Water by We the Kingdom to Moondance by VanMorrison. I can spend a whole day with just music on, giving me that old school lazy Sunday feeling.
I’ve gotten back to camping. My girlfriend and I finally got out for a much long-awaited trip; it was wonderful. I don’t know what is more wonderful than a tent, mattresses, marshmallows, campfire, a cuppa coffee, and memory making. We already have plans set for another time out!
And I paint. On those lazy music Sundays, I pull out my acrylics or watercolors, and I paint. I’m more comfortable with the acrylics so it’s a bit more relaxing. Watercolors are a whole different world, and it takes more patience. Though I’m typically a patient person, I find watercolors can hit an impatient spot within my soul. Maybe I will figure it out, but for right now, I’m enjoying the process of learning.
And sometimes you just need to sleep. We spend so much time running around – even on the inside – we aren’t getting enough sleep. I love sleep. Always have, always will. I am not a napper, yet I have occasionally crawled into bed after work and taken a nap. Honestly, it’s a bit unnerving to me to nap, so my girlfriend said I’m not a real napper, just a rare napper. I can embrace that.
Sometimes we need to stop, look around, determine what we need to do for ourselves to get that break in. Even if it’s 5 minutes every day, it’s your 5 minutes.
So what are you doing to take a break?
Need more self-care and wellness reading?
