Jerrie Mock - first woman to fly around the world - image of her airplane on red background, title "The Flying Housewife"

                      Image created onCanva

61 years ago today on April 17 (1964), Jerrie Mock became the first woman to fly around the world! Today at the MockingOwl Roost, we continue to celebrate this great achievement by a small town gal from Ohio who had 3 dreams in life: to ride an elephant in India, to ride a camel in the Sahara, and to pilot an airplane around the world.

Jerrie never got to ride an elephant, but she sure fulfilled the other two dreams! “Two out of three isn’t bad,” she often said, “for ‘just’ a woman.” And after all the struggles, challenges, and discouragement from the world, Jerrie made the flight in 29 days and 11 hours plus some minutes. Making 21 stops in numerous countries along the way.

And Jerrie happens to have been the grandmother of our editor-in-chief, Rita Mock-Pike. So, Rita got together some of her other actor friends to bring us this full cast, feature-length audio drama – the true story of Jerrie Mock.

Listen along as the cast tells the story of Jerrie’s great adventure around the world in 1964, claiming the title officially on April 17, after 29.5 days, this day 61 years ago!

Phil grew up hearing stories of flight and taking frequent rides in his grandfather’s Cessna 182, so he is very pleased to honor the memory of Jerrie Mock and her significant accomplishment with this performance.
