My Favorite Carving, a Poetry Reading

Image created onCanva
Mouth opened for the sky;
that’s the you who’s new, who I keep in mind.
Waves of our mothers and fathers flow by,
grazing our toes in this sand of wartime.
Like an ax to the neck, oh, how this hurts.
Follow a pattern, get better, think worse.
If we ever found all of the answers we seek
would our questions still long to invert?
Honestly,
I don’t want to be
some nerveless example of wreckage,
a make believe fool who just won’t get the message.
There’s more to us,
and I’m sure of it.
But if that is your reason then I must confess:
you’re living your life in a magazine dress, gutting yourself to affix to a vision.
The voice in your head; have you ever listened?
It’s soft and nice.
