Evening at the Boarding Gate – Dublin
Purgatory’s practice run
unfolds on a discarded day
of low-lying light and rain
to pitiless pilgrims who still
search for destinies and
exits, swept past shops
and kiosks where commerce
is wrapped in the deflated
foil of banners and balloons
as worn souls circle then
settle, one by one, with
back-packs and burdens,
thick as brogue, falling
to floor even as the world
drifts further from them
and tram-loads of provisions,
stacked like firewood, are
whisked towards a procession
of votive candles leading
each soul’s breathless
passage to or from the stars.
