Music Review: “Throwback” by Roy Shakked
Indie Alt-Pop singer/songwriter, Roy Shakked, from Israel/LA offers this bright, funky new album called “Throwback.” The album has 10 songs, including:
- Play On – funk-pop
- Emotional – electronic, chill – almost easy listening
- Your Eyes – acoustic, light jazz vibe
- Nothing You Can Do – funk-pop vibe with almost David Bowie instrumentals
- Ocean – electronic space rock feel
- Fly On the Wall – funk-pop electronic beat
- Harden Your Heart – acoustic/synth pop
- I’m Telling Everyone – indie pop
- Oblivion – electro jazz
- Beautiful Things – acoustic piano pop with brass
The album has a mix of moods throughout as you can see, though most of the music lies closer to “chill” than high energy. The album does bounce a bit all over the place – you definitely won’t get bored with it as a whole!
Shakked says of the album, “This release was created in my personal analog studio, sinking into some fuzzy 80’s and 70’s influenced grooves and harmonies, collaborating with a bunch of amazing musicians around the world in the process.”
My particular favorites on the album are “Beautiful Things” and “Your Eyes” but I’m a sucker for sweet melodies and acoustic instruments. I will definitely be adding them to my playlists for certain types of writing sessions.
I’m not a huge fan of a few of the genres on here, but surprisingly enjoyed the album, nonetheless. I can’t say I’d listen to this on repeat all day (save for maybe the two favorites mentioned), but I would probably let this play in the background on days I’m working and just want some good vibes playing.
The album was released on August 2, 2022. You can stream on Spotify, Bandcamp, and portions on YouTube.
