A Special Family Dinner

My favorite uncles and aunts,
and my favorite cousins, too.
Everyone arrives in sweatpants
to make room for the food.
Every delicacy you can ever buy
turkey, rolls, and snickerdoodles,
in company with the pumpkin pie,
leaves us huffing and puffing.
Sitting around the giant table
wondering what we should do,
Uncle Bob says what he’s thankful for,
his friends and family old and new.
Another Thanksgiving is in the books.
The kitchen is all in disarray,
and we all pitch in to clean.
We’ll all see each other another day,
but this evening was about more than just cuisine.

Transplanted from Ohio to Kentucky to be near her only daughter and three young grandsons, the author wrote her first poem in the fourth grade. She fell in love with the form and was first published in an anthology at fourteen. A battle with multiple sclerosis has caused her to find her home in a nursing home, where she has found time to craft her poetry as well as time to teach writing to other residents. She has been published in several literary magazines and anthologies, including Ohio Bards and The Walt Whitman Anthology.
