The lake swallows me in a scramble
of cramping muscles and weeds.
I flail gasp swallow thrash; bubbles jet through water,
a string of crystal balls to the past
I reach to catch.
And — it’s last monsoon, when you picked me up and
danced me around the garden
laughing screaming
until I breathed in pouring rain —
splutter-wheezing lungs
screaming to unlearn how to inhale —
bursts
pooling
when the blood rushing to my head thrummed a single thought.
I’m
with
you.
My fears dissolve, puddling.
I sink
to the bottom of the lake.
Tunnelling vision
floating
hand reaches
for one last bubble of you, and
I’m —
