I could hear water pounding the surface of the sea and glimpsed out of the hatch to see a waterfall on the shore. The next minute the skipper, Alex, was calling to me. “Do you want to come and wash your hair in the waterfall?”

“Would you like to join us in a game of volleyball?” I looked up at the gangly teenagers before me. Both were tall and thin, and had kind brown eyes and shoulder-length straight brown hair. “I’m Alex and this is Greg,” one of them added, by way of introduction.

Arrival at night was what I was dreading. Night sailing was bad enough, but I had no desire to get into the dinghy after nightfall. The familiar coastline of northern Kangaroo Island came into view, but the sun was setting, and by the time we arrived the coastline would be obscured.
