Unfinished Fragment
(An exploration of grief)
Dan Flore III
when nobody calls, I pick up
the days go down the alleyways
I rise
brush my teeth
like they’re all not already rotten
and wonder
there was something in the sunlight
that said God
and I never knew it was there
or I never bothered following it
I can’t remember
I’d like to kiss the highway
like I’m never coming back
let the cars speed by me
they’ve all already passed me anyway
I’d like to draw your heart
with my shadow
just to watch it all fade
it already has
I’ll see you in all the places I thrived
And there’s nothing left of me now
chew this bitter gum with me
before the bells
of shame and misunderstanding sound
everything is gone
and there’s nothing
I can do about it
sing to the birds
they’re the only ones who can hear you now
little bird
weeping along the bushes
whistle back
you’re all alone here
you sit here crucified
there is no thought to these words
only guts
and
I hope you know I haven’t got any
Nannie’s freakin dead
I don’t know what else
to say
cathedral at dawn
weeping twilight
broken apart
by the sliding doors
may as well shatter the glass
like I have shattered myself
we’re on E
drive me to a full tank
I can’t get outta bed
lampshade sunlight just before twilight
pink reminiscence
the true essence of the dead lightbulb moon
it’s gone now
even though it’s still there
like me,
like you
