Seasonal Greetings: A Thank-you Poem
Image created from pictures on Freepik
‘Twas two weeks before X-“mess”,
but we weren’t merry.
Those holiday horrors
are ancient and hairy.
Our memories go back
much farther than words;
we try to be grown-ups,
but troubles in herds
invade our home,
which is usually secular,
and raise our anxiety
to levels molecular.
Such was our sad state
when a package from Adda
showed up on our doormat
with great gay bravada.
Inside sat a well-swaddled
jar of French cassis
mis en terre, récolté
from his farm dans la Suisse.
Fresh sourdough bread,
with sweet butter well-slathered,
received homemade jam
from what Adda had gathered.
We gobbled those tartines,
so brimming with sweetness,
and our sorrows took wing
as we sighed with repleteness.
O magical jam,
with your flavor so Euro,
you dispelled from our brows
that historical furrow.
Let SoCal proclaim,
as we screw the lid tight,
Happy Solstice, dear Joseph,
we will praise every bite!
