Time of My Life
My friend lives among numbers.
They stand at her door in unwavering lines
guarding and guiding her time.
She knows every date in the history book,
the number of stairs to each landing.
She dutifully marks every step she walks,
the hours she’s swaddled in sleep.
I live invaded by images
disrupting the sweetness of slumber.
Like fireflies blinking their searchlights,
they puncture the curtain of night.
And, in time, as my days become numbered,
what will awaken my daydreams,
sweeping the dust time leaves in its wake
into timeless memories?
My friend lives surrounded by numbers
forever at watch at her doorstep.
I am a hostage of visions
I’m aching to translate to words—
words that can light up like fireflies,
words that can morph to immortal,
words that can fashion the timelessness
of what people label
“a poem.”
