kings of campus
we climbed over the stalls in the restroom,
we played hide and seek in empty classrooms,
we’d say “Bloody Mary!” three times in the mirror,
we fogged windows and wiped them to see clearer,
we complained that we were bored,
we found out where all the snacks were stored,
we sometimes did our homework,
we agreed—our teacher was a jerk,
we cleaned whiteboards and we scraped gum,
sometimes even these chores were fun,
we waited for Mom for hours,
we picked dandelion flowers,
we made our secret pacts,
we watched the clouds while lying in the grass,
we became even better friends,
we never knew this time would end.
