Honouring Comrade

Finally, Comrade had fallen.
Never to rise again,
To command us.
Seven colourful men in camouflage
Honoured Comrade with a 21-gun salute
To bid him farewell.
The brass band sounded the bugle call —
The final roll call to signal ‘lights out’
For a man who will never die.
On his grave laid a national flag
And an olive, vintage coin
He always wore to war.
This was his only lasting legacy,
A sprig of peace for his people:
His comrades and country.
