Rainsong

The rain fell down, the marsh lay deep and wide,
The small green singer raised his ardent plea —
A pulse of life where hidden shadows hide,
A call to join him in the waters free.
Then silence broke beneath a starving dart;
A coil of scale, a sudden, gaping maw.
It claimed within its throat his fragile heart,
And sealed his future in its ancient law.
One final croak broke through the heavy air,
A trembling note to kin who kept their wait,
Though swallowed into darkness and despair,
The ancient chorus would not share his fate.
The song survives all judgments, wrong or right,
An ageless hymn no predator can smite.
