This Christmas Dream

This Christmas Dream. Written and performed by Rita Mock-Pike for the MockingOwl Roost.
I’m tired of the suburbs
of ugly concrete views.
I’m exhausted by windows
that look on parking lots
and buildings dressed in drab gray
and glaring neon lights — no character,
no joy, no natural light and delight —
with no green leafy wonder in sight.
I appreciate a city
with gorgeous architecture and
parks, gardens, and lakeside appeal.
But there’s none in these suburbs to keep me here.
So, for Christmas, I’ve got this wish.
It’s simple, yet apparently complex
in this world with “three times the rent”,
and perfect credit scores of unheard numbers,
two pints of blood for your references.
I want someplace to call home —
someplace with a view.
Maybe a cabin in the woods,
a farmhouse, or cozy cottage
with a flower and veggie garden and trees.
Yes, this is my Christmas wish —
I want nothing else.
Not gifts tied with ribbons,
craft supplies, books, music,
or colorful posies. No. Not one.
Just a house — a home with
light strings, snow, a snuggly spot
where kitty and hubby can keep me warm
as we sing ancient carols,
dress in red and green,
and celebrate love
in all of its magical, revelatory forms.
Yes, this is my Christmas wish,
my hope for the season of delight.
Just this one, simple Christmas wish.
