The Word

She makes you think of so many things,
When you hold her to your chest.
She’s your water when you’re thirsty,
When you’re weary, she’s your rest.
You want to erase all the sadness
That she’s found with other men.
You want to learn all of her secrets
And then discover each one again
You want to show her the universe,
Give her a ride down the Milky Way,
But no matter what you tell her,
There’s one thing you mustn’t say.
It’s too soon. You’re just beginning!
So though it seems a bit absurd,
Though you want to shout, I LOVE YOU!
You know you mustn’t say The Word.
You want to show this woman off,
Make every man turn green.
Envious, because she’s the sweetest
Thing they’ve ever seen,
And she’s walking arm in arm with you,
Just an ordinary schmoe,
Who somehow netted an angel
That was flying a bit too low.
So though you whisper in her ear,
How she sets your blood aflame
With the words your heart is begging to say —
You must be cautious just the same.
It’s too soon. You’re just beginning!
So though it seems a bit absurd,
Though you want to shout, I LOVE YOU!
You know you mustn’t say The Word.
Wizards mutter incantations,
Politicians use words to sway crowds,
So we must be careful when we choose
To speak our thoughts aloud.
So though her kiss can make you melt
Like no kiss you’ve ever had,
And just her whisper in your ear
Is enough to drive you mad,
And her laughter makes your spirit dance,
And you’ve never felt like this before,
You tell her she’s precious, and special to you…
But you want to say so much more
It’s too soon. You’re just beginning!
So though it seems a bit absurd,
Though you want to shout, I LOVE YOU!
You know you mustn’t say The Word.
