How You Know It’s Love

It doesn’t always awaken with a speech.
It slips in as a glance across a quiet room,
the lull between words —
the way someone smiles,
or the way you do.
It’s a hand holding yours at the table,
as if they had been reaching for you all along.
It’s the silence after laughter
when you both feel the echo still warm in the air.
It’s a cup of tea made just the way you like it,
waiting on the counter without a word.
And a coat draped over you just before the rain comes.
Or it’s the moment you realize you’ve been in love all along.
It’s the scent that lingers in those moments,
the breeze that carries their name
to you, when you’re feeling alone.
It’s the song that plays when you don’t ask for music,
and then you realize, “They’re playing our song.”
Yes, love is the butterflies,
but it’s also in the stillness after they settle.
It’s the way the world goes quiet when you look for me. Yes, I know I’m home.
You don’t have to say it. I know. You know.
All this is my way of saying “I love you.”
