You are my anchor,
my lighthouse,
my comforting blanket,
the Earth that reminds me that my roots are stronger than I think
when I feel ungrounded.
The right amount of order
to bring my chaos to manageable levels.
The listening ear and the shoulder to lean into
and a comfortable chest to curl on
(a privilege I share with our cats).
And a long hug, calming and sheltering,
that needs no words and no permission
to stop time.

Elena Shirokikh
Elena considers herself a world citizen. Originally from Russia, she immigrated to Spain with her family at the age of ten. Her passion for languages led her to study Translation and to read authors from around the globe. In 2017 she joined a volunteer project in Greece, where she met her Canadian husband. She eagerly moved to Canada with him in 2020, where she has resided since then. She has written poetry since early childhood, but writing in English is a recent endeavor for her. She believes in the transformative power of language, in finding joy in everyday life and thriving in community.
