Assumption

Scooped up from sleep by angel arms,
taken to the gates of Hell
where visions of terror burned my eyes.
The damned thrashed in a conflagration,
smell of seared flesh in acrid air.
I witnessed souls burning, grotesque faces,
contorted bodies mirroring their agony.
Strangely, despite the fire, they were intact.
Was this my destiny? Was this my eternity?
Prised from the abyss of Hell,
more arms bore me to the Gates of Heaven.
Behind them I could see light, blinding beam
boring into my eyes. I could hear a choir
singing around the Lord’s throne
sight, sound, senses have no place
only refreshment, light, and peace
promised to us all by His only Son.
Had I really died and gone straight to Heaven?
Once more, transported on angel wings,
I returned home. Too terrified
to open my eyes. I fell to my knees
with gratitude to God for sparing my earthly life,
giving me a vision of the end
to warn others that the wages
of sin are death
but the gift of God is eternal life
through our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
