The Curse

One April night, Earth’s cloudy, coal-black screen
Tore with a bellow, lashing all the streets
With myriad malformed spherules full of sheen
And coating them like chalk-white, lengthy sheets.
That time, we damned the sky for raging on
Our town, dismantling cable poles. A haze
Of gloom hanged all around, and calm was gone.
This monarch’s reign prevailed for several days.
Then May arrived with its long, molten weeks,
Whose fierceness took the life of paddy lands
And strangled all the wells and flowing creeks.
In temples, muttering lips and joined-up hands
Implored the sky for solace every hour—
Perhaps our former curse subdued its power.
