In Praise of Late February

When coffee’s tolerably hot,
You cool it nonetheless — foo, foo —
By habit or instinctively.
Late February’s similar too:
The influence of wintertime
Makes you pull up the quilt of tweed
Reflexly, while the weather says,
“Go switch the fan on if you need.”
This planet, once a schlocky sketch
Made by December’s hue — graphite —
Becomes a splendid fresco where
The paints are flowers and sunlight.
The sky, a multiplex-like screen,
Displays a movie where a few
Small, plumy planes hide in the clouds
Then once again appear in view.
For chaps like me, the nicest time
Is high noon. Oh, to have a meal
Of many palatable grubs,
Then plunk down on the bed and feel
Its softness while the window breeze
Works with my gently moving chest
To send me to a different world:
The never-never land of rest.
