The Stone Mirror
The mirror on the wall
is too objective
There’s no softening
of stiff cheeks
no smoothing of lines
formed over time
just gray reflections
under the flickering light
It’s nothing like my doting mother
to whom I will always be
the reddest apple in the sack
her presence replaced
by the cold gaze
of the silver pane
The looking glass
will never give back
more than it takes in
