Consider Mrs. Claus
Let’s take a moment to pause
and think of poor, old Mrs. Claus.
She once was lively and young
and had difficulty holding her tongue.
At times she herself
was quite a jolly elf.
Lately, she has been marooned
with comfort from ice cream and spoon.
No longer full of vim and vigor,
she’s just a full four sizes bigger.
Left alone on the most special night of the year
has brought more than just one tear.
What can she say? He’s bringing good cheer.
It’s the other 364 days that make her mad.
What she does not understand…
Why have a house full of elves
when he wants to do it all himself?
She finally had more than enough.
She’ll stand up for herself though it’s tough.
Now they sit together on a counselor’s couch.
He doesn’t talk much, but…
they’re together outside of the house.

Paula Frew
An Ohio native, the author wrote her first poem in the fourth grade. It was entitled Daffodils. At that time, she fell in love with the form. She wrote through the angst of adolescence and into the beauties and dissonance of adulthood. She has of late begun to write flash fiction. It speaks to her as another short form. Her first chapbook, Lyrical Legacy, was published in 2021. She has also been included in several anthologies. All are available on Amazon.
