A Sweetest Day Sweetie

Once, she was a little girl
who’d hide behind her little curls
but she was someone’s whole world.
Her old Poppy thought she was the best.
He wouldn’t trade her for all the rest,
even when she put him to the test.
He didn’t mind the time and trouble
of teaching her what’s acceptable,
and she usually was agreeable.
He fixed her meals with delicate flair.
Even when punished, she’d never be scared.
On Sweetest Day, he’d send her blooms beyond compare.
A bouquet of daisies so blue
that all day she’d think how they’re cool,
so he sent them all through high school.
Then years later, when he passed,
“Why him?” was all she could ask.
But all that came were blooms from the past.
