Scrooge & Sue - a Christmas Love Poem - by Paula Frew - red Christmas candles on snowy background

                      Image created on Canva

This is the story of Saucer-Eyed Sue
Who simpers and swoons over old Mr. Scrooge.

We all know the story, oh, yes we do
                      Of old Ebeneezer,
                      That skinflint old geezer,
Who was so cheap and stingy that sweet Bob and family
Could barely afford to buy any tea.
                      No clothes, no meats,
                      No shoes, no treats.
That all came to an end on Christmas Eve.
The ghosts showed him how none would grieve
                      When Scrooge’s spirit did leave.
Not one tear would ever be shed
By anyone hearing that Scroogey is dead.
That all changed the next morning when Scrooge awoke –
He threw open the window and yelled to the folks,
“I know that I’ve been selfish and sour,
But today will be my finest hour!
I will be sure to share and to care
And give to the poor everywhere!”
From that day to this day
He helped people in many a way,
                      To make their lives better.
                      He’s become a baby-kisser, an animal petter,
                      A ‘happy day’ singer, too,
But when the day is through
                      He still goes home alone
To a supper of beans and corn pone.

                      This chipper and dapper fellow;
                      Who’s generous, smart, and mellow,
                      Is the one over whom
                      Sue chooses to swoon.
Now the first time pretty, little Sue
                      Met old Scrooge, it’s true
He was taking food to the poor
                      And almost knocked her down
                      Coming through the door.
He said that he was sorry.
She told him not to worry.
She saw past his wrinkles and his cane
Straight to his big heart and big brain.
                      After courting for a year–
Everyone stop and give a cheer!–
                      Scrooge and Sue got wed.

And this is what the paper said:
Dressed in white from head to toe,
The beautiful bride stole the show.
Walking the aisle with regal stride,
All eyes were on dear Scrooge’s bride.
                      Something borrowed, something blue.
She has it all and then some, too.
They’ve started a life of wedded bliss
They’re both in love. How can they miss?

There you are, and now we’re through
With the story of Scrooge and Saucer-Eyed Sue.
