Positivity Corner: My Morning Tea Routine
One struggle that plagues nearly every creative person I know is the formation of a solid, steady, healthy routine — especially when they work from home. As such a person, this issue began for me in Spring of 2017 and each year has become more challenging thanks to many life changes such as marriage, my elderly mother moving in, and economic difficulties.
Starting about two months ago, I finally found a great way to get my day going: a morning tea routine.
A Glimpse Into My Morning Tea Routine
I’ve drunk hot tea on the regular for many years anyway, but I’d never formalized this as something intentional — it always just happened before when I had time. I never made it a priority, but since doing so, it has opened up productivity, energy, and positive vibes for my day.
Now, I rise from my slumber and head immediately to the kitchen. Before turning on the lights, I put the kettle on. While the water bubbles towards its ideal temperature, I flick on light switches, open curtains, and set out my mugs for my various cups of tea that I will drink as part of my morning tea routine which bleeds into the rest of the day.
When the first cup is ready, I take it out to drink on the balcony and take a breath away from the world. No phones, no music, no books. Just me and the tea. And meditative breathing for as long as it takes me to finish off that full cup of tea.
My Morning Tea Routine Always Includes Green Tea
Green tea first fell into my life about six years ago when I began my studies for a personal fitness trainer certification. I discovered that the antioxidants and mild but bright, grassy taste of the green tea make this healthy option ideal for any routine. I don’t need caffeine to get my day going (it really doesn’t “wake” me up), but the overall benefits are felt nonetheless over time.
I tend to bounce between a few brands, depending on what’s available, but my preference is a loose-leaf green tea that I get from the local Mitsuwa Marketplace, the Celestial Seasoning’s Smooth Green and White Blend, or, surprisingly, Dollar Tree’s plain bagged green tea (better than most bagged green tea options!).
Rooibos Loose Leaf Always Makes it to My Morning Tea Routine
The other constant is a good, solid cuppa Rooibos tea. I prefer loose leaf tea, but any authentic Rooibos tea will do. I tend to grab a bag of loose leaf online, then shop around at local international grocery stores for flavored Rooibos teas as a back-up or bonus addition to my morning tea routine.
Why This Morning Tea Ritual Matters
You wouldn’t think this small ritual would do much, but it really does help to anchor my day, which, in turn, boosts my productivity and creativity. Plus, it tastes great.
Primarily, though, this step away from reality and all the demands of life allows me to find peace, joy, and a bit of hope in the day, even when my life is a dumpster fire of chaos on the other side of that empty mug.
