Positivity Corner: Morning Power Hour
Several months back, I wrote an article for Her Agenda on the concept of a power hour – not just a morning routine, but a routine each morning that gives power to your day.
Since then, I’ve been working towards creating the perfect design for myself. I’ve not found complete success, for sure, but what I’ve managed has thus far made a huge difference in my life on the days on which I have my power hour, first thing before I start work.
Now, the difference between a power hour and a morning routine is this: a power hour is filled with things that empower you for the day. A morning routine establishes your movements for the day.
My morning routine includes making tea, opening curtains, brushing my teeth, feeding the cat, planning my workday, and watering the plants.
My power hour, on the other hand, includes 25 minutes of walking or running, 25 minutes of personal writing (fiction or journaling, depending on my goals and mood), 10 minutes of yoga, 10-15 minutes of callisthenics, and other things that serve to embolden and empower my day. Nothing to do with work – just to do with me. Things that give me energy and strength and have nothing to do with business or non-personal goals.
Often, it’s difficult for me to find time for a solid workout, personal creative time, and other things that help me grow as a person. That’s exactly what this power hour is for.
The daily plan isn’t the end-all, by any means, but it makes a huge difference in my day when I can focus on it. And especially now that I’ll be in seminary full-time and working full-time, this precious hour-plus block of time early each day will be one giant piece of the puzzle in keeping my sanity.
